Chi ci segue costantemente su Golfo dei Poeti news si ricorderà di Sofia, (qui il link dell’articolo) vi avevamo parlato di lei che a soli 12 anni compone la sua musica e la suona al pianoforte. Da gennaio, Sofia e la sua famiglia si sono trasferiti temporaneamente negli Stati Uniti nel New Jersey, per la precisione a Plainsboro, per motivi di lavoro del papà. Questa nuova intervista vi condurrà nel mondo di Sofia, tra la sua esperienza di “home schooling” in America e le sue ultime novità. I suoi genitori ci daranno anche una prospettiva sulle differenze tra i due continenti. Buona lettura!
D.: Come è cambiata la giornata di studi per Sofia con il trasferimento?
R.: Il programma di studio è rimasto uguale. In America abitiamo in una zona molto tranquilla con un enorme prato verde e alberato che ci permette di andare in bici, sul monopattino o pattinare sulle rotelle. Osserviamo i bellissimi uccelli colorati, scoiattoli, papere, cigni ed oche e facciamo tante foto della flora e fauna che ci circonda. Sofia continua a fare due lezioni private di piano alla settimana collegandosi con la sua maestra dall’Italia. Frequenta una scuola di ginnastica ritmica tre volte la settimana per due ore e gioca a scacchi nella biblioteca di Plainsboro una volta alla settimana confrontandosi con diverse età da 5 a 16 anni. Uno dei vantaggi della “home schooling” è che si può fare ovunque e si ha la libertà di gestire il tutto come e quando preferiamo. Possiamo tranquillamente viaggiare per lavoro o per piacere senza problemi. L’unica cosa che è cambiata riguarda il modo in cui Sofia trascorre il suo tempo libero.
D.: Come è nata l’opportunità per Sofia di esibirsi in concerto?
D.: Questo concerto ha rappresentato un traguardo importante per Sofia? Cosa ha significato per lei e anche per voi genitori?
R.: Appena arrivati a Plainsboro, abbiamo subito notato la bellissima biblioteca. Sul sito abbiamo visto un pianoforte in una grande sala e abbiamo contattato l’organizzatore degli eventi musicali, il quale dopo aver ascoltato la musica di Sofia ci ha subito risposto e fissato la data del concerto. Una delle cose belle di cui l’America gode sono le grandi, attrezzate e comode biblioteche. Ogni biblioteca organizza diversi programmi istruttivi, divertenti, artistici, musicali e culturali per qualsiasi età. Sul sito possiamo trovare un calendario giornaliero con tutte le attività disponibili. Le biblioteche sono un luogo d’incontro, di scambio di idee e di informazioni. Si possono imparare tante cose salutari come yoga e meditazione, istruttive come incontri di astronomia, scienza, lingue, computer, scacchi, cucito, disegno; culturali come il festival cinese, della primavera, della lettura, e guardare film. La cosa più bella è che è tutto offerto gratuitamente.
R.: Questo concerto ha dato a Sofia la possibilità di suonare la sua musica. è stata una grande prova e sfida per lei. Ha suonato per un’ora e mezza e presentato i suoi pezzi. Ha lavorato duro e ha superato la paura di essere giudicata. Dopo un’ora e mezza era stanca ma fiera di avere affrontato il tutto con coraggio, umiltà e ingenuità. Come genitori siamo molto orgogliosi di lei e ringraziamo James per averle dato fiducia e supporto. Il concerto tutto per lei è stata un’enorme opportunità di crescita e prova di resistenza. Inoltre ad aprile, Sofia ha cominciato a suonare in diverse comunità di pensionati “retired communities”. Per lei sarà un’ottima pratica, un modo per affrontare e vincere l’ansia, la paura di fare errori e di essere giudicata. Donare il proprio tempo agli anziani e regalare loro il sorriso è una lezione di vita per chiunque soprattutto per i giovani.
D.: Come vi siete ambientati in America in generale? Quali sono state le maggiori differenze che avete notato?
R.: Quando siamo arrivati in New Jersey a gennaio, abbiamo trovato temperature molto più fredde rispetto all’Italia e alla Liguria. Tuttavia, per non rimanere in casa, ci siamo coperti bene e siamo usciti lo stesso a passeggiare. Una delle cose che apprezziamo di più è trascorrere il tempo libero nelle biblioteche locali. Inoltre, vicino a casa abbiamo delle zone naturali meravigliose dove possiamo osservare la fauna selvatica nel suo habitat, senza disturbarla. Questa esperienza ci regala una profonda sensazione di pace. Entrambe queste cose ci mancheranno molto quando torneremo in Italia. In generale gli americani convivono meglio con madre natura accettando gli animali liberi e rispettandoli. L’ambiente qui nel NJ non e vario come da noi in Liguria. Si può guidare per ore senza notare differenze e le distanze tra un posto e l’altro sono enormi. Per quanto riguarda il costo della vita è molto alto rispetto ad anni fa ed è poco compensato dall’aumento degli stipendi americani. Il sistema anche se è peggiorato è comunque sempre migliore di quello italiano: è ancora la terra delle opportunità. Qui la cortesia e la gentilezza delle persone è veramente apprezzabile. Per quanto riguarda la qualità del cibo l’Italia mantiene sempre il primato.
D.: Avete in programma di rientrare in Italia in futuro?
R.: Speriamo che il lavoro ci consenta di tornare presto. A tutti noi manca tanto l’Italia. Siamo innamorati dell’ambiente e del clima italiano, tuttavia per Sofia è fondamentale trascorrere del tempo con i nonni che abitano qui, poiché li vede di rado quando viviamo in Italia.

Sofia from Ameglia flies overseas and her music enchants America
Those who follow us constantly on Golfo dei Poeti news will remember Sofia, (here is the link to the article) we had told you about her, who despite being only 12 years old already composes her own music and plays it on the piano. Since January, Sofia and her family have temporarily relocated to the United States in New Jersey, Plainsboro to be precise, due to her father’s work. This new interview will take you into Sofia’s world, between her “home schooling” experience in America and her latest news. Her parents will also give us a perspective on the differences between the two continents. Happy reading!
Q.: How has the study day changed for Sofia with the move?
A.: The school program has remained the same. In America we live in a very quiet area with a huge green, tree-lined lawn that allows us to ride our bikes, scooter or skate on wheels. We observe the beautiful colorful birds, squirrels, ducks, swans and geese and take many photos of the flora and fauna around us. Sofia continues to take two private piano lessons a week by connecting with her teacher from Italy. She attends school of rhythmic gymnastics three times a week for two hours and plays chess in the Plainsboro library once a week comparing herself to different ages from 5 to 16. One of the advantages of “home schooling” is that it can be done anywhere and we have the freedom to run it as and when we like. We can easily travel for business or pleasure without any problems. The only thing that has changed is how Sofia spends her free time.
Q.: How did the opportunity for Sofia to perform in concert come about?
A.: As soon as we arrived in Plainsboro, we immediately noticed the beautiful library. On their website, we saw a piano in a large room and we decided to contact the organizer of the musical events, who after hearing Sofia’s music immediately responded and set the date for the concert. One of the beautiful things America enjoys are the large, well-equipped and convenient libraries. Each library organizes different educational, entertaining, artistic, musical and cultural programs for all ages. On the website we can find a daily calendar with all the activities available. Libraries are a place to meet, exchange ideas and information. You can learn many healthy things such as yoga and meditation; instructive things such as meetings on astronomy, science, languages, computers, chess, sewing, drawing; cultural things such as Chinese festival, spring festival, reading festival, and watching movies. Best of all, it is all offered free of charge.
Q.: Was this concert an important milestone for Sofia? What did it mean for her and also for you as parents?
A.: This concert gave Sofia a chance to play her music. It was a great test and challenge for her. She played for an hour and a half and presented her pieces. She worked hard and overcame her fear of being judged. After an hour and a half she was tired but proud that she went through it all with courage, humility and ingenuity. As parents we are very proud of her and thank James for giving her confidence and support. The whole concert for her was a huge opportunity for growth and proof of resilience. Also in April, Sofia began playing in several “retired communities.” It will be great practice for her, a way to cope and overcome anxiety, fear of making mistakes and being judged. Donating your time to the elderly and giving them a smile is a life lesson for anyone, especially young people.
Q.: How did you adjust to America in general? What were the biggest differences you noticed?
A.: When we arrived in New Jersey in January, we found much colder temperatures than in Italy and Liguria. However, in order not to stay indoors, we covered ourselves well and still went out for walks. One of the things we appreciate most is spending our free time in local libraries. Also, close to home we have wonderful natural areas where we can observe wildlife in its habitat without disturbing it. This experience gives us a deep feeling of peace. Both of these things will be greatly missed when we return to Italy. In general, Americans coexist better with Mother Nature by accepting free animals and respecting them. The environment here in NJ is not as diverse as here in Liguria. You can drive for hours without noticing differences and the distances between places are huge. As for the cost of living, it is very high compared to years ago and is little compensated for by the increase in American salaries. The system even if it has deteriorated is still better than that of Italy: it is still the land of opportunity. Here the courtesy and kindness of people is truly appreciable. As far as the quality of food is concerned, Italy always maintains the lead.
Q.: Do you have plans to return to Italy in the future?
A.: We hope the work will allow us to return soon. We all miss Italy so much. We are in love with the Italian landscapes and mild weather however, it is essential for Sofia to spend time with her grandparents who live here, as she rarely sees them when we live in Italy.
